FEARS AND PHOBIAS
Fear is an emotional way of warning us about impending danger. It is our subconscious mind responding to a specific thing or situation which suggests imminent disaster on one level or another. When faced with fear, our bodies produce excess adrenaline. This prepares us for a quick response to either run away or stand and fight. Our heart rate increases and blood courses through the muscles which enables us to react better in an emergency.
One example of this could be the fear of flying. A person might contemplate travelling by plane but greatly exaggerates the risks involved. The rational mind knows that of all the millions of flying hours taking place every week all over the world, the possibility of disaster in miniscule. The irrational mind discards this and the possibilities become greatly enlarged. Even to the point of believing that they will be a victim.
It is normal to feel fear in dangerous situations. However a Phobia is a fear greatly exaggerated or imagined.
Some examples of Phobias are:
Vertigo or fear of heights Claustrophobia or fear of confined spaces Fear of Flying Fear of Spiders and Snakes Eating Disorders and fear of excessive weight Fear of Examinations and Interviews Fear of the Opposite Sex Relationship and Sexual fears and difficulties
